Sen. Tammy Duckworth , a retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel, pulled no punches when discussing Fox News commentator Pete Hegseth , Donald Trump ‘s pick to lead the Department of Defense . The Democratic senator sounded off on Hegseth’s lack of experience, calling him a “pretty low-ranking guy” when he was in the military. Hegseth served as an infantry officer in the Army National Guard in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as at Guantanamo Bay. He has worked at Fox News in various on-air roles since 2014. “He was a pretty low ranking guy in the military, and he never had a command position,” Duckworth told host Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation. “He was a platoon leader, I think, once or twice, but he never even commanded a company. And so this is a man who is inordinately, unqualified for the position.” The senator continued, “The Pentagon is three million servicemen and women and civilians. It is over a $900 billion budget. He’s never run anything anywhere near to that size.” Even Republican senators have spoken out anonymously against Hegseth’s nomination, with one senator telling Rolling Stone Trump’s choice “makes no sense!” Duckworth additionally criticized Hegseth’s vocal opposition to women serving in combat roles. Hegseth has said, “I’m straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. It hasn’t made us more effective, hasn’t made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated.” “He’s wrong,” Duckworth said of Hegseth. “Our military could not go to war without the 220,000 plus women who serve in uniform. Women [serving] in our military does make us more effective, does make us more lethal.” Duckworth was co-piloting a Black Hawk helicopter in 2004 in Iraq when it was shot down by an RPG. Duckworth was severely injured, losing her legs and partial use of her right arm. In addition to his terrible takes on women in combat, Hegseth wrote in his book that the Pentagon’s “social justice” messaging and “woke” policies have harmed recruitment efforts. “America’s white sons and daughters are walking away [from military service], and who can blame them,” he wrote in the book , The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free , published in June. Editor’s picks The 100 Best TV Episodes of All Time The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time Hegseth also faces a sexual assault allegation , which, according to Rolling Stone’s reporting he hid from Trump’s transition team. A woman accused Hegseth of sexually assaulting her in a California hotel room in 2017. According to a police report , the woman said Hegseth took her phone and “blocked the door with his body,” preventing her from leaving the hotel room. She said she “remembered saying ‘no’ a lot” to him. Hegseth told investigators he had sex with the woman, but it was consensual. He later paid the woman a settlement in an undisclosed sum. In exchange, she signed a nondisclosure agreement. Hegseth made the payment to save his career, since the matter “would result in his immediate termination from Fox,” Hegseth’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, told The Washington Post. “It’s frankly an insult and really troubling that Mr. Trump would nominate someone who has admitted he paid off a victim who has claimed rape allegations against him,” Duckworth said . “This is not the kind of person you want to lead the Department of Defense.” Duckworth also expressed worry that Republicans in the Senate are prepared to approve not just Hegseth but Trump’s other nominees . “I’m deeply concerned that they will green light [anyone Trump nominates],” she said, adding, “From what I’m hearing from my Republican colleagues on everything from defense secretary to other posts, it sounds like they are ready to roll over for Mr. Trump.”Mid-American Conference football goes all in on November weeknights for the TV viewers
Attorneys general from 24 states are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling and uphold an Arizona law to prohibit biological boys from competing on girls' sports teams. The petition comes after a federal appeals court ruled that the law likely violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. "Sports teams are divided by sex to begin with to give girls a level playing field so they're not competing against boys," South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said in a news release. "Arizona's law restricting girls' sports teams to biological females is just common sense, and it protects girls from competing against bigger, stronger males who identify as females." President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday nominated Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the US ambassador to France, in the latest of several controversial picks. Kushner "is a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our Country & its interests," Trump said on his Truth Social website, adding that Jared "worked closely with me in the White House." The choice is in keeping with Trump's pattern, so far, of selecting people, often wealthy, who are close to his family or of proven loyalty. Kushner is a multimillionaire real estate executive and former attorney; his son was a senior adviser during Trump's first term. Trump did not mention, however, that the elder Kushner once served jail time -- a two-year sentence, most of it served in a federal prison. Kushner, who is now 70, pleaded guilty in 2004 to 18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign contributions. The case, which was prosecuted by then US attorney Chris Christie, included sordid details, to which Kushner admitted: that he had hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, a man cooperating in a campaign finance inquiry, and then videotaped the encounter and sent it to the man's wife, Kushner's sister, to dissuade her from testifying against him. Christie, who worked on Trump's first presidential transition team and then opposed him in this year's Republican primary contests, later said Kushner had committed a "loathsome" and "disgusting crime." In 2020, Trump issued a pardon to Kushner, whose conviction had resulted in him being disbarred in three states. Nominees for key ambassadorships are often business associates of a president-elect, or major political donors. But it is rare, if not unprecedented, to name a convicted felon. The first two men to fill the prestigious Paris post were famed inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin and a future president, Thomas Jefferson. If confirmed, Kushner would succeed Denise Bauer, a former ambassador to Belgium who was a major Democratic fundraiser and donor. md/bbk/md
Harry Kane continued his fine form this season to inspire Bayern Munich to victory on Friday night. The England captain also set yet another Bundesliga record thanks to his eighth hat-trick for the club. Kane scored all three goals as Bayern beat Augsburg 3-0 at the Allianz Arena. He completed his treble with two strikes in stoppage time to reach 50 Bundesliga goals in just 43 matches. In doing so, the 31-year-old becomes the fasters player in history to achieve that feat. It comes just two months after Kane reached 50 Bundesliga goal contributions . His tally of goals and assists came in 35 matches, eight fewer than previous record holder Erling Haaland . Kane has now scored a staggering 64 goals in 61 appearances since joining the German giants last summer. Those strikes include 20 in 17 matches across all competitions this term. Meanwhile, he is now clear at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts. The former Tottenham striker also scored for England last weekend, with his penalty against the Republic of Ireland extending his record tally to 69. As for Bayern, they extended their lead at the top of the table with Friday's victory over 10-man Augsburg. Second place RB Leipzig are eight points further back but have played a game less. Kane and Bayern are next in action at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Young men swung to the right for Trump after a campaign dominated by masculine appealsWaterloo-based Sandvine is scheduled to be back in court Dec. 4 as it reorganizes the company following the loss of nearly half of its revenue, according to court records. During the past 10 months, the company laid off workers and saw revenues nosedive before obtaining some relief under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangements Act or CCAA. Justice Peter Osbourne of the Ontario Superior Court handed down a ruling Nov. 7 giving the company more time to reorganize. The next court hearing scheduled for Dec. 4 may bring clarity around how Sandvine plans to stay in business. Sandvine had the support of more than 97 per cent of its secured lenders when it started restructuring months ago and that bodes well for the company’s future, said Anne Hart, a spokesperson for the company. “The overwhelming support from these existing investors is indicative of the optimism regarding Sandvine’s future,” Hart wrote in an email to The Record. Hart is a strategic and financial communications adviser with New York City-based Prosek Partners. After Sandvine was blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Commerce in February 2024, no American corporations or government agencies could do business with it. It was placed on the Entity List after Sandvine technology was used to censor the web and block news sites in several countries and inject spyware into the smartphone of a in Egypt. For more than nine years, international human rights groups, internet watchdogs and civil society organizations carefully documented the use of Sandvine technology to abuse and deny human rights in a long list of countries. In response, Sandvine announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer, a new board of directors and the creation of an ethics advisory panel. It also started pulling out of undemocratic countries. It has exited more than 30 countries and will leave another 24 countries ruled by authoritarian regimes by March 31, 2025. Nearly half of the company’s revenues came from those oppressive governments and it’s not clear how it will replace those earnings. Since it was removed from the Entity List in October, the company has struggled. Sandvine employs about 500 people, down from about 750 a year ago. Registered in Kelowna, B.C., and headquartered at 410 Albert St. in Waterloo, the company is privately owned. It was founded in 2001 by about 30 former employees of PixStream. In 2017, Sandvine was sold to Francisco Partners, a private investment firm in San Francisco. It was merged with Procera Networks, which owned the NSO Group, the Israeli company that makes the Pegasus spyware. Since then, Sandvine has changed owners at least twice, but there is no transparency around its ownership. The new owners are some of the company’s investors. Court records related to the Nov. 7 ruling show Sandvine is insolvent and needs more time to reorganize. “The applicants require immediate CCAA protection so that they will have the necessary breathing space to complete the last step of their balance street restructuring,” court documents stated. The company needs to get more money from existing lenders “and have the time and resources to implement orderly exits from high-risk jurisdictions and restructure their operations accordingly,” court records stated. Sandvine was once a darling of the Waterloo Region tech sector and received millions of dollars from the Ontario government.

The report from Fox News said Trump told Trudeau that if Canada could not withstand his threatened 25 percent tariff on all Canadian imports, then it should be absorbed into the United States. Asked about Trump’s post, Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller said “it sounds like we’re living in an episode of South Park.” The comment to journalists in Ottawa was a possible reference to a plotline in the satirical 1999 South Park movie, when the US and Canada go to war, with American characters rallying around a song entitled “Blame Canada.” Canadian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was also asked by a reporter if she thought Trump seriously wanted Canada to become part of the US. “That is a question, really, for the president-elect,” she said. Don’t panic Trump has a habit of provocative statements, especially on social media, that can be read as jokes or bluster. During his first term, Trump repeatedly discussed buying Greenland from Denmark. “Why are we subsidizing these countries?” Trump said in a televised interview that aired Sunday, referring to Mexico and Canada. “If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state,” he told NBC. Publicly, Trump and Trudeau said their meeting at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago estate went well. Trump accuses top US trading partners Canada and Mexico of not doing enough to stop the flow of illegal migrants and drug trafficking. He has threatened tariffs against both neighbors, despite them being part of a trilateral free-trade agreement with the United States. After the Florida dinner, Trump said it was “a very productive meeting,” while Trudeau said he had an “excellent conversation.” In a speech Monday to the chamber of commerce in the eastern Canadian city Halifax, Trudeau said Canada would “respond to unfair tariffs,” as Ottawa did during Trump’s first term when Washington slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. “We’re still looking at the right ways to respond,” Trudeau told the audience. The premier acknowledged that Trump’s proposed tariffs would be “devastating” for Canada and the risks should be taken seriously, while also urging calm. “One of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic,” Trudeau said. — AFP

As the blueprint for a hard-right turn in America became a liability during the 2024 campaign, Trump pulled an about-face. He denied knowing anything about the “ridiculous and abysmal” plans written in part by his first-term aides and allies. Now, after being elected the 47th president on Nov. 5, Trump is stocking his second administration with key players in the detailed effort he temporarily shunned. Most notably, Trump has tapped Russell Vought for an encore as director of the Office of Management and Budget; Tom Homan, his former immigration chief, as “border czar;” and immigration hardliner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of policy. Those moves have accelerated criticisms from Democrats who warn that Trump’s election hands government reins to movement conservatives who spent years envisioning how to concentrate power in the West Wing and impose a starkly rightward shift across the US government and society. Trump and his aides maintain that he won a mandate to overhaul Washington. But they maintain the specifics are his alone. “President Trump never had anything to do with Project 2025,” said Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a statement. “All of President Trumps’ Cabinet nominees and appointments are whole-heartedly committed to President Trump’s agenda, not the agenda of outside groups.” Here is a look at what some of Trump’s choices portend for his second presidency. As budget chief, Vought envisions a sweeping, powerful perch The Office of Management and Budget director, a role Vought held under Trump previously and requires Senate confirmation, prepares a president’s proposed budget and is generally responsible for implementing the administration’s agenda across agencies. The job is influential but Vought made clear as author of a Project 2025 chapter on presidential authority that he wants the post to wield more direct power. “The Director must view his job as the best, most comprehensive approximation of the President’s mind,” Vought wrote. The OMB, he wrote, “is a President’s air-traffic control system” and should be “involved in all aspects of the White House policy process,” becoming “powerful enough to override implementing agencies’ bureaucracies.” Trump did not go into such details when naming Vought but implicitly endorsed aggressive action. Vought, the president-elect said, “knows exactly how to dismantle the Deep State” — Trump’s catch-all for federal bureaucracy—and would help “restore fiscal sanity.” In June, speaking on former Trump aide Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, Vought relished the potential tension: “We’re not going to save our country without a little confrontation.” Vought could help Musk and Trump remake government’s role and scope The strategy of further concentrating federal authority in the presidency permeates Project 2025’s and Trump’s campaign proposals. Vought’s vision is especially striking when paired with Trump’s proposals to dramatically expand the president’s control over federal workers and government purse strings—ideas intertwined with the president-elect tapping mega-billionaire Elon Musk and venture capitalist Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency.” Trump in his first term sought to remake the federal civil service by reclassifying tens of thousands of federal civil service workers — who have job protection through changes in administration—as political appointees, making them easier to fire and replace with loyalists. Currently, only about 4,000 of the federal government’s roughly 2 million workers are political appointees. President Joe Biden rescinded Trump’s changes. Trump can now reinstate them. Meanwhile, Musk’s and Ramaswamy’s sweeping “efficiency” mandates from Trump could turn on an old, defunct constitutional theory that the president—not Congress—is the real gatekeeper of federal spending. In his “Agenda 47,” Trump endorsed so-called “impoundment,” which holds that when lawmakers pass appropriations bills, they simply set a spending ceiling, but not a floor. The president, the theory holds, can simply decide not to spend money on anything he deems unnecessary. Vought did not venture into impoundment in his Project 2025 chapter. But, he wrote, “The President should use every possible tool to propose and impose fiscal discipline on the federal government. Anything short of that would constitute abject failure.” Trump’s choice immediately sparked backlash. “Russ Vought is a far-right ideologue who has tried to break the law to give President Trump unilateral authority he does not possess to override the spending decisions of Congress (and) who has and will again fight to give Trump the ability to summarily fire tens of thousands of civil servants,” said Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, a Democrat and outgoing Senate Appropriations chairwoman. Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, leading Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, said Vought wants to “dismantle the expert federal workforce” to the detriment of Americans who depend on everything from veterans’ health care to Social Security benefits. “Pain itself is the agenda,” they said. Homan and Miller reflect Trump’s and Project 2025’s immigration overlap Trump’s protests about Project 2025 always glossed over overlaps in the two agendas. Both want to reimpose Trump-era immigration limits. Project 2025 includes a litany of detailed proposals for various US immigration statutes, executive branch rules and agreements with other countries — reducing the number of refugees, work visa recipients and asylum seekers, for example. Miller is one of Trump’s longest-serving advisers and architect of his immigration ideas, including his promise of the largest deportation force in US history. As deputy policy chief, which is not subject to Senate confirmation, Miller would remain in Trump’s West Wing inner circle. “America is for Americans and Americans only,” Miller said at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Oct. 27. “America First Legal,” Miller’s organization founded as an ideological counter to the American Civil Liberties Union, was listed as an advisory group to Project 2025 until Miller asked that the name be removed because of negative attention. Homan, a Project 2025 named contributor, was an acting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement director during Trump’s first presidency, playing a key role in what became known as Trump’s “family separation policy.” Previewing Trump 2.0 earlier this year, Homan said: “No one’s off the table. If you’re here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder.” Project 2025 contributors slated for CIA and Federal Communications chiefs John Ratcliffe, Trump’s pick to lead the CIA, was previously one of Trump’s directors of national intelligence. He is a Project 2025 contributor. The document’s chapter on US intelligence was written by Dustin Carmack, Ratcliffe’s chief of staff in the first Trump administration. Reflecting Ratcliffe’s and Trump’s approach, Carmack declared the intelligence establishment too cautious. Ratcliffe, like the chapter attributed to Carmack, is hawkish toward China. Throughout the Project 2025 document, Beijing is framed as a US adversary that cannot be trusted. Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, wrote Project 2025’s FCC chapter and is now Trump’s pick to chair the panel. Carr wrote that the FCC chairman “is empowered with significant authority that is not shared” with other FCC members. He called for the FCC to address “threats to individual liberty posed by corporations that are abusing dominant positions in the market,” specifically “Big Tech and its attempts to drive diverse political viewpoints from the digital town square.” He called for more stringent transparency rules for social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube and “empower consumers to choose their own content filters and fact checkers, if any.” Carr and Ratcliffe would require Senate confirmation for their posts.
